Emergency/Crisis Appointments

Students in crisis already connected with treatment should first contact their primary counselor to schedule an immediate appointment. If unavailable, your counselor will direct you to go to Askew for a same-day appointment which will focus on ensuring your immediate safety. Students in crisis who have not previously been seen will receive an initial contact appointment to assess needs, safety and recommendations for next steps.

If a life-threatening emergency, call 9-1-1 and notify FSU D at (850) 644-1234.

During Business Hours: Students can be seen by an on-call counselor the same day or be referred to additional support services as appropriate by coming to the center.

After Hours: Students may call our after-hours hotline at (850) 644-TALK (8255) for phone support. If you are in crisis and need to speak with someone in person, please go to the Tallahassee Memorial Hospital Behavioral Health Access Center at 1616 Physicians Drive, Tallahassee, FL 32308. Their phone number is (850) 431-5100.

First Contact

Students can start services by coming to the Counseling & Psychological in-person or by calling during the hours of 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday. We are located on the second floor of Askew Student Life Center. Students are asked to complete some paperwork and meet briefly with a counselor. This meeting is not a counseling session, but a review of needs and recommendations for services and support based on those needs. Sessions are offered in-person for students located in Tallahassee, and through Zoom dependent on certain enrollment and location factors. In-person appointments are seen on a first-come, first-serve basis and Zoom appointments are scheduled in advance by calling our center.   For more information on the kinds of services we offer, please browse Clinical Services above.

Follow-Up Appointments

Follow-up or recurring appointments are scheduled directly with your primary counselor at your appointment or by calling our main number to schedule or reschedule appointments. Paperwork is required prior to all sessions, so please arrive early to ensure you receive a full session.

As therapeutic needs of students vary, you and your counselor will collaborate to establish goals for counseling. The exact focus and balance of the counseling experience will depend on the concerns you bring into therapy, your counselor’s perspective, and the preferences voiced over the course of therapy. The counseling experience often has ups and downs and at times you will feel as if you are making rapid progress; at other times you may feel stuck. This is natural, but you can make important contributions by being open and honest about your feelings, thoughts and behaviors. It is important to prioritize your mental health, attend all scheduled appointments and apply what you have learned between sessions.

No-Show Fee and Appeals

Counseling & Psychological Services does not charge for services.
However: a no-show fee of $50 for individual, couples, and group screening sessions, or $25 for group sessions will be applied if an appointment is not canceled or rescheduled by noon (12 p.m.) the prior business day.
Late arrivals will also be subject to a no-show fee. Charges will be posted to the account of enrolled FSU students as “CC Service Fee.” (No confidential or sensitive client information will be disclosed with this fee.)

An appeal process is in place to help address unforeseen circumstances that may result in a no show or late cancellation fee.
To appeal the no-show fee on your student account, you must submit a request via our confidential Fee Appeal Form.
Please note: A separate appeal form must be completed for each fee appeal request.

Examples of possible reasons to apply for an appeal:

  • Personal illness: Absence due to illness.
  • Family emergency: Absence due to serious illness, injury, or death of an immediate family member.
  • Exceptional circumstances: Permission may be granted at the discretion of the school official.
  • School emergency: Any time the university sends FSU Alert notifications that include cancellation of classes for the FSU Main Campus (i.e., extreme weather conditions, campus lock-down).
