More Information:
RENEW (Realizing Everyone’s Need for Emotional Wellness), a peer educator program sponsored by the University Counseling Center, was established in September 2006 by 19 Florida State University (FSU) students. It is currently one of FSU’s largest peer educator organizations on campus and the recipient of the 2008/2009, Division of Student Affairs, “Program of the Year” Award. RENEW’s mission is to encourage an overall healthy lifestyle by increasing student awareness of the importance of emotional wellness. As part of the University Counseling Center outreach program, RENEW trains students to become peer educators who promote the importance of emotional balance as a vital part of an individual’s overall well-being.
RENEW members facilitate emotional health and wellness presentations for a variety of FSU campus organizations, as well as instructional sessions for individual students on topics such as time and stress management, and study skills. RENEW partners with Thagard Student Health Center and Campus Recreation to co-sponsor Stress Buster Day and World Aids Awareness Day programs. RENEW also staffs resource and educational tables at various events on campus such as Residence Life, Student Activities, the Health Center, Parents Weekend Open House, the Student Union, Strozier Library and Campus Recreation. RENEW also works to reduce the stigma attached to mental health counseling. RENEW member Sabrina Omega commented, “I want to reach out to those that may feel like they are too embarrassed to get emotional help or just don’t know that the help is out there.”
Being part of RENEW is a rewarding experience offering its members the opportunity to provide an invaluable service to the campus community. RENEW’s secretary, Carrie Love described how she has reaped the benefits of RENEW when she said, “Giving emotional health presentations around campus has given me the opportunity to help other students as well as myself.” RENEW provides its members with valuable leadership, communication and academic success skills that will continue to benefit them throughout their lives.
